“Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” With these words, Alexander Graham Bell made history by being the first person ever to speak through a telephone. Invented on March 10, 1876, Bell’s telephone would go on to connect a growing nation, and revolutionize the entire world. What other invention has changed the world so much? The telephone was able to connect The U.S. at a time of great growth and change. It would then spread across oceans and borders and bring people together like never before.
The inventor of this amazing invention, Alexander Graham Bell, was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. A brilliant inventor, he had made his first invention when he was only 12 years old. He, along with his colleague and friend, Thomas Watson, began his journey with the development of a telegram that would send several messages over one wire. This invention eventually led to the development of the telephone.
Although we all know that Alexander Gram Bell invented the first telephone, did you know that there were actually many inventors that were racing to develop this life changing technology? Using foresight, Bell patented the invention a few months before he was able to succeed in transmitting sound over the telephone. His patent was accepted on March 7, 1876, just three days later, Bell transmitted the first words on the machine that would revolutionize America and then the rest of the world.
The telephone was not a huge hit in the late 1800s right away. The telegraph was still the major mean of communication and critics of the telephone labeled it a toy. The telephone got an unexpected lift at the World’s Fair. The Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II, who was in attendance, was amazed by the telephone and word of Bell’s great invention spread across the entire world.
As the telephone’s popularity grew, business became more effective. By 1895, there were over 45,000 telephones in the US. New York and Boston were connected by the telephone and so were New York and Chicago. Because of the spread of the telephone, businesses could run more efficiently, sending messages to branches all across the nation. This allowed businesses to stay on the same page and help the customers. The telephones also connected family and friends that were million of miles away. Because of the telephone, America grew and connected like never before.

Around the turn of the century Bell Telephone Company was now doing well. Telephones were getting more and more popular and the companies could not keep up with all of the business the lines were getting more and more crowded. It got so bad the bell phone company could not keep up and eventually went out of business.
There was a government committee that formed to oversee the telephone companies. It was called the “FCC” or the Federal Commerce Commission. This commotion discovered that Western Electric was charging too much for equipment. AT&T lost a lot of money because of this fraud from western electric.
There was a break in the investigation because a huge hurricane hit the east coast and with that happening the storm knocked out thousands of phones. After the hurricane there were thousands of people asking for their phones to be fixed or replaced.
In 1959, the phones began to change drastically in color and in style and in 1963 the first touch phones came out. By 1971 there were over 100 million phones in service. In 1974 the government was getting involved. They wanted to break up the Bell Company because they thought that it was becoming too big and powerful. Later the Bell Company was split up in to 7 different companies that were owned localy.
In the 1980’s the first mobile phones started to come out. They were only made for phone calls nothing else.
By the 1990’s the cell phones began to get smaller and smaller and faster. It was also the beginning of texting, a huge revolution in instant messaging.
By the 2000’s the phone began to turn in to smart phones that could do all kinds of things like surf the web, text, email and take pictures. This was the biggest thing that happened to the phone to this day. In 2012 the phones are a lot faster and smarter than the first smart phone.
